League Companion for Sheets

The League Sheets Companion is a free Google Sheets™ spreadsheet to maintain a league's standings and schedule. Besides basic league management functions and letting users edit, organize, and export data as desired, it is also formatted to allow for the relevant league data to be transferred to the Playoff Computer App. 


To get the Companion and set it up for data transfer to the App are as follows:

  1.  Get the Sheet here. A Google account is likely required.
  2.  Make a copy (File -> Make a Copy). The original spreadsheet cannot be modified by users, a copy is required.
  3.  The spreadsheet can be renamed as desired and multiple copies for multiple leagues can be made.
  4.  Follow the guidance provided in the spreadsheet or see below to enter data. Also see Additional Information below.
  5.  Once the data is ready to be transferred to the App, use the 'Share' button (or File -> Share -> Share with others) to change 'General access' to 'Anyone with the link'.
  6.  Optional. For exporting to Excel or embedding in a website, 'Publish' the Sheet (File -> Publish to web).
  7.  Close the Sheet by going to the Sheets Home page, then re-open the newly copied Sheet. This allows for an easier way to copy the URL rather than the 'Copy link' function on the 'Share' menu.
  8.  Using the URL address shown in the browser, copy the Sheet KEY, which is only the characters between the slash after 'spreadsheets/d/' and the following slash. Do not include the slashes.
  9.  Paste this KEY into the App under the Sheets option.
  10.  Recommend saving this KEY as the 'Saved League ID' for future use.


Additional information:

This spreadsheet provides three buttons to clear data and automatically calculate standings based on the schedule results input. Use of these buttons shown on the spreadsheet requires overriding Google security warnings. If it is preferred to avoid granting this blind trust, an official authorized Google extension was created containing the same functionality. These can be accessed via Extensions > League Companion and clicking the desired option (e.g. Clear/Update). If for some reason this extension is not showing it can be added via  https://gsuite.google.com/marketplace/app/foo/82450363486.
